We paid 80 euro for our room, which is not bad but a little steep for what we got once you convert to our weak US dollar. Owner/reception guy was very friendly and welcomed us with glasses of wine and a town map with a short verbal intro to Eger when we arrived. Garden out back is lovely (our room faced the garden and not the street, which was nice). Our room was clean but very dated in terms of decor--old carpet, cheesy red velvet bed, etc. (The bed was nice in a humorous sort of way.) Breakfast was pretty standard, though I will note that there was a tiny worm in my meat--not real appetizing. Another customer noted it to the staff and a woman switched out the plate of meat immediately. Also, we must have had a communication issue with the friendly owner (who had good English, so I'm not sure how this happened); he told us the sellers in the wine valley were open until 10 or 11. We went around 9, after dinner, and basically everything except the restaurants had closed at 8. I would have been very disappointed except for the fact that the Hungarian wine I had had at nice restaurants in Budapest was decent but didn't blow me away (I'm not a huge wine snob, but I appreciate a really good wine when I come across one). But it was a disappointment in that the reason people come to Eger is for the wine tasting, and we missed out on that experience. The downtown is pretty and walkable. Castle on the hill was okay but the exhibitions were average. I agree with one of the reviewers below that you don't really need more than one day in Eger unless you are doing something else nearby (i.e., hiking). It was nice to get out of the hustle of Budapest for a break, however. I guess the Romantik was okay, but I would try another place if I went back. Location was good.

We enjoyed our one-night stay at the Romantik. The room was rather basic, but the delicious breakfast in a lovely garden more than made up for it. Our hosts were friendly and very helpful in terms of restaurant suggestions, sightseeing in charming Eger, and in making our rather complicated travel arrangements from Eger to Sopran. The price was very fair.
