Ateneo Puerta del Sol - Madrid, Spain     

Based on some of the reviews here, I had low expectations for this hotel, but my husband and I found a great price online (85 euros) and the location is central and walkable to everything. Our room was HUGE, much larger than usual for a city hotel in Europe. It didn't have a lot of character, but it was definitely spotless and modern, and we had free internet access from our room. We had no problems with noise whatsoever (our room was not facing the street, but we were right next to the elevator), and we slept like babies. The hotel is also right near a police station, which made me feel better about safety after reading about all the prostitutes in the area. In our experience, the street was fine - I would stay there alone as a woman and not worry about it. As far as prostitutes, we didn't see a single one. Either I couldn't recognize them or it was too cold for them to be out on the street! While I wouldn't call the staff overly warm, they were very helpful whenever we asked for advice or directions. All in all, it was a solid experience. If you can catch a good price, this hotel is fine for a business trip or as a tourist if you want to see more of the city than your room anyway!
