Stayed here for a day during a long-weekend trip. Chose this place for some rest after a party in Nottingham, could not have been happier with the choice. Great setting opposite the racecourse, with a lake behind the Hall. If you do stay here, you must take a leisurely stroll through the grounds. Fantastic on a Summer evening. Picked a superior room, was given one facing the racecourse and fountain at the front of the property. Room was massive...but the bathroom was probably the biggest I have seen in 20 years of travelling. Separate shower, bath in the middle of the room. Room decked out in period-style furniture. Fridge and tea/coffe making facilities. Large LCD TV. Bed very comfortable, all generally clean. Good quality amenities in the bathroom. Bought a bottle of champagne in with me, borrowed an ice-bucket from the restaurant, sat in the bathtub and had one of those "how I'd like to live" moments. Took advantage of the offer in the restaurant. Food was above average, nothing spectacular. There are a couple of things that I didn't find too great: 1) There was no air-conditioning. OK, so for a period house this size it may not be feasible, but all we had in the room was a desk-top fan. At least two floor-standing fans should have been there 2) The bar was closed because of a wedding. Although the wedding party invited us to join them, and to use their bar, I felt as if the hotel guests were neglected because of this. However, in spite of the two points above, it would be unfair of me to award anything less than a 5...especially after my previous nights stay in the Crowne Plaza, another 4-star rated property. The differences between the two could have been greater.
