Browns Tavistock - Tavistock, United Kingdom 4 star hotel

Address: 80 West Street, Tavistock, PL19 8AQ
Browns Tavistock details:  On the edge of Dartmoor National Park, this 17th century Coaching Inn has been refashioned into an award-winning town house hotel, brasserie and wine bar.

Providing well equipped accommodation, you can treat yourself to the sophisticated, locally sourced cuisine in the stylish Brasserie. Explore the chic surroundings and you'll be able to enjoy a glass from from the extensive wine cellar, amid comfortable sofas and winter log fires; or during summer months relax in the courtyard and soak up the sun in the airy conservatory, where you will find a functioning fresh water well that is said to date back to Roman times. Such features are further complemented by a modern gym facility, making Browns the 'Town Hotel of the Year, 2006' according to the prestigious 'The Good Hotel Guide Cesar Awards'.

Originally built by the 7th Duke of Bedford, Brown's most interesting feature is its ancient well that can now be found in its conservatory. Believed to have been constructed by the Romans, its fresh water still runs today and is bottled on the premises, available for you to try.

Particularly renowned for its traditional Sunday lunches, the Brasserie features a varied menu of locally sourced meat, fish and vegetarian dishes, chosen and prepared by a professional chef. Lunch is available for around 15 GBP, with dinner costing approximately 35 GBP. Meals are also on offer in the bar area.

It's hard not to repeat what many other reviewers have already said, but I have never paid for two such bad nights' sleep. Our room was at the front of the hotel, it was extremely noisy - both from the street below and the surrounding bedrooms and hotel bar. There's no aircon, and despite it being a fairly cool weekend, it would have been good to have had the window open, but the noise meant this was out of the question - and even with the window closed, the racket was unbearable - not a wink of sleep before 4am both nights. The bathroom was tiny; the continental breakfast very poor (don't be fooled by the claims of freshly squeezed orange juice and locally pressed apple juice - the Sunpride cartons were barely hidden outside the kitchen); and whilst the restaurant food was good, the options were very limited outside the expensive fixed price menu. All the 'boutiquey' styling, Molton Brown toiletries and Roberts radios in the world can't make up for failing to deliver that most basic of hotel requirements: a decent night's sleep!

It is not cheap to stay at this hotel so in return for hard earned cash, it is reasonable to expect a decent night's sleep. Well not in Browns it isn't. We booked a standard double as we were attending a wedding during the day and only really wanted the room to sleep in. We were allocated Room 15 which is on the first floor overlooking the Tandoori Indian Restaurant on the main road. It was dreadful. The noise from late night revellers kept us awake until well past 3am and then it all started again at 6am when other guests wanted to move their cars. The so called car park is at the side of the hotel and whilst apparently catering for 7 cars they are all parked one behind another. Therefore when someone wants to leave, all the cars have to be moved. We would have probably got a better nights sleep if we had slept in our car! In addition, the bathroom had no natural ventilation and the fan had broken so the room smelt really musty. The 'light' continental breakfast was OK and the cost was ?12.50 for a full english breakfast, which we didn't have. Quite honestly I was glad to leave. Dartmoor was fantastic and so was the wedding but as for Browns - no way would we stay here again.
