Mirabello Hotel - Heraklion, Greece     

We stayed in Hotel Mirabello for one night, on a stop over after the ferry from Santorini. It is a fairly basic hotel and a bit dated, but seeing as we checked in late and left early the next morning it was fine. We weren't expecting anything too special having read some of the reviews here, but we disagreed with the reviews from the "Lonely Planet" and "Rough Guide" for this accommodation. We had a smallish double room on the 3rd floor . There is a lift which looked like it had seen better days, but did the job! Our room was furnished with a double bed, wardrobe and had a fridge, tv, air con, and sink. The en suite bathroom was fine, but the water took ages to drain in the shower! The balcony is a large one, shared between all the rooms on that floor. We didn't have a huge amount of interaction with the staff, but they were friendly and efficient. Overall I wouldn't recommend staying for more then a night. This hotel did not offer similar value for money we had experienced in other places we stayed in Crete and Santorini. (We are a couple in our mid 30s and spent 2 glorious weeks travelling around Crete and Santorini)

Simple but clean. Our room had a sink basin and separate showers for men and women were down the hall. No A/C but fan was in room and worked well. Non-smoking room but hallways have lingering smoke smell, which was likely from the lobby below. There is an elevator for those who need it. If needed, will store your luggage for the day. Also, has book exchange for EUR 1. Heraklion is the armpit of Crete (just a big industrial city), but if you must stay so you can visit Knossos, this hotel might be the best bet for a budget traveler.
