Good Deal but small room

We stayed in three different hotels in and around the Acropolis and at 109 Euros (booked through a local travel agent) this was the cheapest, and probably the best value for money. Which isn't to say it was perfect, but nevertheless no enormous disappointment. On the upside the location is very good. It's a few minutes on foot to the Acropolis subway station and just a bit more to the Acropolis. It's also on the North side of the acropolis, so there's not all the plaka tourist craziness around (we filed that one under "benefits"). On the downside our room was shockingly microscopic: enough to elicit a spontaneous laugh of disbelief from both of us when we first saw it. But in Athens there's plenty to do outside so we just dealt with it by wedging our carry-on suitcases any which way we could cram them and watching our shins as we crept around the furniture. There's also the issue that the bed was very bad (of the large sag in the middle type). Finally, it looked like the room hadn't been vacuumed (or their vacuum cleaner has suction issues). The breakfast (included in our room rate), was mediocre. A reasonable amount of choice, but mostly second-rate foods (canned fruits, generic white bread, etc.). The one exception was the coffee, which I found undrinkable.

Avoid Room 101

I stayed at this hotel in mid-June for a couple of nights. The first night I was put in Room 101. If you happen to get this room, request an immediate change. The room is located right next to the front desk, and also next to a loud fridge. The insulation is horrible. You can hear everything clearly in the room (and I assume they can also hear everything at the front desk) At night, the fridge's compressor made a constant loud whirring noise that would last a few seconds, pause... then start up again. It was impossible to sleep. I was moved into another room the following day, however the hotel's air conditioning system completely failed, and I spent the night tossing and turning. I wont be staying at this hotel again. Pros: Quiet area, Close to Acropolis, Mattresses surprisingly not hard Cons: Tiny cramped rooms, staff friendly but not very helpful, crappy breakfast, some bathtubs are split into 2 heights and quite dangerous.

Fine Hotel in a Great Location

Stayed at Philippos for three intervals during a two week trip to Greece. Liked it very much and would happily stay there again. It is across the street from the new Acropolis Museum (not yet open but promised for very soon) and a five minute walk to the Acropolis, close to most classical sites. Rooms are compact but very well equipped. Bathrooms same. Our first room had no view, but the last visit (maybe the like repeat customers?) we were in Room 505 with a large terrace and a slice of an Acropolis view. Recommend the roof terrace of sister hotel Herodion up the street for an evening drink and a fabulous view of the Acropolis. The breakfast (included) was excellent. Staff competent and helpful although not outgoing. Note that there is a short set of stairs as you enter the hotel and if that is a problem you will have to go up and ask someone to get your bags.
