Wallet "disappeared" from my locked hotel room

While I cannot prove my wallet was stolen from my hotel room, I can state the facts and let the reader decide. The problem began with I was given a room with a broken safe, I notified the front desk of this fact, and was told it would be fixed. It never was. For two days I was diligent about making sure that either I or my husband had the passports and wallets before leaving the room, but on the last day of my stay I accidentally left the wallet on the dresser. We were gone less then two hours and upon our return we noticed our room had been cleaned -- and my wallet was gone! I admit leaving my wallet out on the dresser was a stupid mistake (thank god I had my passport) but what kind of staff does this hotel hire that they (apparently) steal a wallet from a room?. I've been to four other countries within the E.U. and this has never happened to me before. I filed a police report at the local station, but we all know how much good that is going to do.

To ensure I was not somehow mistaken, we turned the room upside down, took bed linens off the bed, took the mattress and box springs off the bed to see if the wallet had fallen down within the bed, and tore apart every piece of our luggage. Nothing. When we got home, I took each piece of clothing, checking each and every pocket. We also checked each pocket of our luggage, but no wallet. I really wanted to be wrong about this, I have been sick with worry and extremely sad (crying since I left Greece) knowing that the only reasonable explanation is that someone with access to my hotel room stole my wallet.

The only thing this hotel did for us was let us use their phone to call our bank and credit cards. I received no apology and no monetary refund. This has cost me money and time, not to mention the fact that I have no drivers license or credit cards to pay for anything. Upon checking out of the hotel, the EXACT words from the women at the front desk was, "Well what can I say". What this hotel failed to realize was that this one act has destroyed my vacation. I won't remember Athens Greece for anything else except this.

We stayed at this Hotel after tripping around Europe, America and the Uk for 5 weeks before this. It was comfortable but not the most luxurious hotel that we stayed in however the service from the fabulous staff was second to none and the location is superb! What a difference great staff can make to enjoying your experience. These guys were outstanding, always helpful, friendly and willing to go the extra mile at all times of the day and night. They are to be commended! The hotel as many others have said is in an excellent postion. A minute away from the breath-taking sight of the acropolis high on the hill and round the corner from Plaka restaurants and shops. Our room was comfortable, air-conditioned and always clean. The same as the photos already posted on other reviews. The breakfast was fabulous and included local favourites such as vine leaf wrapped morsels and yoghurt and honey as well as cold meats, breads, cakes, cereals, bacon, eggs, sausages, juices and tea and coffee. What really impressed me was on the morning we flew out, we needed to leave the hotel by 6.00am. We expected that that would mean we would just have to miss breakfast as normally seems to happen in most hotels if you leave before the breakfst service starts. Instead the staff had set up a continental breakfast just for those leaving early which we very much appreciated! We stayed for 2 nights before flying out to the islands and then returned for one more night before leaving Athens. The Hotel provides a lugguage minding service for a reasonable fee which was terrific rather than having to carry heavy big bags on the ferries and small planes. We got in around 10.00 at night tired and ready for bed only to find that the staff had already transported our suitcases from storage up to the room and onto the suitcase stands ready for our arrival. Very thoughtful! A tip, this restaurant, Shola Rhio Ouzeri Kouklis (around 5 minutes walk away) was terrific and lots of fun, inexpensive and a terrific place to try lots of different traditional mezedes (tapas) as an introduction to Greek food. They were turning people away in droves the night we were there and the food was beautiful. On Tripodon 14 where it meets Lisiou.
