Best Western Hotel Melba - Bastogne, Belgium 

Our stay was very pleasant, meeting lots of people from the States who were there, as we were, to visit WWII sites. We needed to rent a car, and the staff helped us with everything, including driving us to the mechanic shop that had the one car in the city to rent. They translated for us into French so we understood the terms of the rental. The staff let us keep our luggage in a locked room when we checked out so we could explore the city baggage-free before we caught the afternoon train.

We spent one night at the Hotel Melba in early July of 2007. It was just okay. I believe this hotel is listed as a four star, I disagree, it is more like a three star. Our room was spacious, however the bathroom smelled very musty. There is no air conditioning, which we were aware of when booking and thankfully the weather was cool. Upon our arrival our window was open and it smelled a little of dog, not sure if they allow pets to stay at the hotel. (Keep in mind the outside tempature was between 55 and 65 that day and raining off and on, so we thought it was odd the window was open.) Our room had not received an update since it was originally built some 15 years ago so it felt a little worn. During the evening/night, even with our window open, we found the hotel noisy, perhaps there was a family staying above us with children running around???? Breakfast was fine with a lot of choices. The staff was pleasant and helpful, but nothing out of the ordinary. It was fine for one night, but we would have not stayed at Hotel Melba for our entire vacation. However, we did experience a wonderful full day tour with Henri Mignon. We were so impressed by Henri's knowledge of the Battle of the Bulge and took us to numerous sites. Our tour with Henri was the highlight of our two week trip to Belgium and the Netherlands. Do not hesitate to hire him!!!
