We stayed one night in the Falcon by accident as we were travelling through and decided we were too tired to go on, how we wish we had. The young receptionist was very helpful and told us that the room she had allocated to us was one of the best. We climbed to the top of the hotel with luggage, not easy but looking forward to a hot shower and a sleep before dinner, when we saw the room it was, to say the least, disapointing, but as it was for one night it was not worth asking to be moved, but we decided we would skip breakfast because if the cleanliness of the room was anything to go by it would be a bit risky. Not being able to put the bathroom light on (due to only a very old net curtain with a large hole in it) made showering difficult, and the mould growing from the tiles was off putting to say the least! could this account for the terrible smell coming from the wash basin or was it the drains? after this, seeing the old blood stains and cigarette burns on the bedding came as no suprise, but we have never had to remove most of the bedding in a hotel bfore getting in to bed! Leaving as early as posible in the morning we complained to the assistant manager who still charged full rate (minus breakfast) .The whole place has a seedy rundown appearance and wecannot understand how it can be a genuine AA *** Hotel. I am still off work after tripping off the strange bed platform that is carpeted the same as the floor and badly spraining my back, surely this is a safety hazzard!

We decided to book the Falcon hotel for the weekend of the Burghley Horse Trials as my event horse was competing and my daughter and her husband who live in Yorkshire were joining us on this exciting occassion . We all know the Falcon as both my daughter and her husband went to Uppingham school in the 90's and my youngest son was there until in the late 90's. So, we all had an enormous shock when we arrived to what has become a filthy, uncared for hotel. The 2 bed rooms we were given for the price of £95 per room were a disgrace. Dirty bathrooms, old worn towels, carpets stained with mold at the back of the loo and shower tiles dirty and stained . The diningroom carpet was old matting which was full of black stains and the place where they serve snacks and breakfast in the bar had dead baskets of plants on the window sills. When I asked the manager about this he started to rant about me only wanting money off the rooms and he said he 'refused to listen 'to any of this criticism of his hotel and just walked out of the hotel front door! In the morning when we checked out he he had taken £20 off of each room . As we left to get our car in the car park I also noticed that the doors were filthy where you put your hand to open them. All that requied was someone to use a cloth and some ajax to clean it off. It is a very sad state of affairs when a hotel can charge people £95 for a small dirty room and get away with it.
