Castle and Ball - Marlborough, United Kingdom 3 star hotel

Address: High Street Marlborough, Marlborough, SN8 1LZ
Castle and Ball details:  Situated in the centre of Britain's widest high street, the Castle and Ball occupies a site where an inn has stood since the 15th century.

Some of the hotel's surviving original oak timbers predate the Spanish Armada. The hotel features an all day brasserie which offers an extensive menu of delicious, freshly prepared meals and an excellent wine list. The picturesque walled garden and terrace seating provide a delightful setting for alfresco dining. An ideal place to relax after perusing the many attractive shops at the hotel's doorstep.

We stayed there for one night on our honeymoon trip through England and it was the worst experience on our whole trip. The reception guy was very unfriendly and we felt like everything else than a appreciated guest. We have booked according to the concierge the best room and it was really spacoius with an amazing four poster bed. It could have been very romantic, but unfortunately the room has not been hoovered before our arrival, so the floor was not clean. The bathroom was not clean either, so we didn?t feel very comfortable during our stay. Furthermore during night when we turned on the beside lamp, the bulp burst and the breakfast was not very good. So NEVER AGAIN!!

The pub / hotel is situated on the main shopping street in Marlborough, a quaint town which has a street market 2 days per week. The hotel entrance is to the rear, avoiding the need to carry your luggage through the pub area. The hotel also has free car parking to the rear. The pub is clean, airy and modern and staff exceptionally friendly. The staircase leading to the rooms has a threadbare carpet and chipped doors, however the rooms are clean with basic but adequate furnishings. Bathrooms are again clean with plenty of towels and “Gilchrist & Soames” shower gel and shampoo dispensers over the bath. The over bath shower was modern with excellent water pressure and temperature control, although the shower curtain sticks to you as you use the shower, I hate that and wish hotels would weight them down. Room comprised an old style TV with basic 5 channels, stereo player, tea & coffee making facilities, hair dryer and phone. I was staying in a spacious four poster bedroom (by chance), so maybe my experience was different to other reviewers; or maybe I don't expect 5 star accommodation for a 3 star price! For the price paid, it offers excellent value for money; enhanced by it’s idyllic central location (for restaurants, shops and pubs) and ultra friendly staff. Creaky floorboards and uneven floors add to the character of this old building, but it does mean that any movement by adjacent guests can be clearly heard. Breakfast was included and although service is relaxed (slow), the food is good with a varied selection of hot and cold items. I would certainly return, if in the area and the stay was short.
