Stayed at The Laurels for two nights in September. Found the room to have old fashioned decor and rather large cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, single mattresses on a double bed, one really soft the other hard. Room I was in had a very loud extractor fan both in the bathroom and the main part of the room which came on everytime you turned the bathroom light on and you can hear other guests moving around the hotel. Was staying on my own and felt very uncomfortable at breakfast as most of the other guest were of the older generation and looked at me as if I shouldn't have been there.

The en-suite bedroom was large, well equipped, and clean; the bathroom was fine. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the whole hotel had a quiet, civilised, organised, air about it. I personally found the bar to be a bit small; also the dining room was a bit cramped, and the breakfast plates were too small – although the food was excellent (I booked in for B&B only). When I stayed, some of the dining room waiters seemed from their accent to be French (although I do not know that for certain); anyway, they clearly had a very different idea to me as to what constituted white coffee, I had to ask for more milk on several occasions. The hotel is very well placed for access to St. Helier, although if walking, involves passing through a road tunnel under Fort Regent which was rather noisy and within which the air quality was not too good. There is easy pedestrian access to the beach without the need for a car. The hotel has a swimming pool although it did not appear to be in use in July 2005 when I was staying. Despite the minor problems in the dining room, overall, I felt my stay constituted good value for money and if I elect to visit Jersey in the future, I would definitely consider staying at The Laurels again.
