Ryde Castle address: The Esplanade, Ryde, PO33 1JA

Ryde Castle details: With views across the Solent, this majestic building is said to have been commissioned by Henry viii. It offers a full a la carte menu and delicious bar food. A friendly spirit is a rumoured resident.

A stay at The Ryde Castle is something to remember. Ryde itself, though a major tourist resort and international yachting centre, retains a pleasant Victorian cheerfulness. The majestic castle building overlooks Ryde Esplanade and the harbour, with views across the Solent. The Castle is believed to have been commissioned by Henry VIII, around 1540, to defend the Spithead, Southampton Water and The Solent against the threat of a Spanish invasion. A mischievous, but friendly, spirit is rumoured to be a permanent Castle resident. We offer delicious bar meals and snacks, and a full a la carte menu from the Brasserie. What's so special about us? Of the 21 comfortable bedrooms, some have four-poster beds and most have fantastic sea views.

it was kind of a strange place food was great always hot and plenty. Rooms need re decorating, very dark and old,not a place for a older person to stay lots of stairs no lift. Could be very noisey in the middle of the summer holidays as its right on the front (sea). Need to get more professinal staff in the dining room. Also some mantienace on the rooms like putting up a towel holder properly. But as the new managers have only been there since january they need time to get it all together then im sure it will be a lovely place to stay i wish them luck. i

Having stayed at this hotel three times previously and received a wonderful welcome, good food and excellant service we decided to return again due to a family reunion and what a disappointment....The hotel was dirty, the food terrible, the staff nothing like they were before smart, attentive. The hotel seems to have lost all its charm now nothing more than a glorified pub with rooms we will definately not return nor will we recommend it
