Hawkwell House Hotel details: Our English country house, in the town of Oxford, is set within three acres of well designed mature tree lined gardens. On arrival there is at once a sense of calm...a tranquil oasis.

The hotel is in the leafy village of Iffley which is situated near the River Thames, just a short drive from the centre of town, complete with its own Norman Church next door to the hotel; Hawkwell House provides peace in a busy world, and unusually for the area free on site parking. We have 66 en-suite bedrooms which are sumptuously decorated and offer luxurious accommodation with en-suite facilities, direct dial telephones, state of the art televisions, modem points as well as a hospitality tray. Arezzo is our award winning restaurant, the heart of the house and overlooking the fountain patio, is centre stage to a stunning menu of contemporary, yet highly individual dishes. Lovers of fine food and wine will enjoy accomplished meals punctuated by fastidious service and epicurean skill. Well, what can we say. The room were of a decent size, and the location was good. That said, everything else was an utter disappointment. From the website you would imagine the restaurant was one of the finer Italian restaurants in Oxford. However, after having breakfast in the same room we were apalled from ever visiting the diningfacilities again. Service was a shame, and the food was inedible. The bathroom was filthy with hair and dust in the tub. A well-used sponge was left behind by the cleaners on the second day of our stay. Room was pre-paid - so we did not change after one night. The idea of pre-pay at this establishment is quite understandable. Television in the room was good, but the internal wi-fi in the hotel did not work on our Mac. The staff was uninterested in sorting out this problem. During a week in various locations in Britain the service was the worst experienced.

This is one of those hotels where someone has spent a lot of money on their website and good photos for their website but the actual hotel is deprived of any investment. I have stayed in many hotels but this has to be rated as the filthiest. The tub hadn’t been cleaned (hairs in the bathtub) and the bed skirt had a very large stain with some crusty bit stuck to it. The curtains had a hole in them and the TV only provided the free channels. The furniture was tired and the food was cheap, bland and lacked any imagination. On a positive note, the staff were very friendly and the area is quite quiet and pleasant. There is a very nice patio area overlooking the garden (although the bar had not been cleaned in the morning – dirty glasses everywhere from the night before).
