Location

Oban is known as “The Gateway to the Highlands” is a picturesque port on the west coast of Scotland.

Oban was a fishing village but is now one of Scotland's most popular tourist destinations. It is the ideal port from which to visit the islands. It has many attractions for the visitor including the Oban Distillery which was built by Hugh Stevenson in 1794. The sunsets over Oban Bay are quite breathtaking in their splendor.

Thouroughly enjoyed our stay at The Columba. Susan Shaw and her staff made our stay most enjoyable. Our rooms were very clean and comfortable. The food at both breakfast and dinner was excellent and plentiful. One of our party was 50 while we were in Oban and Susan went out of her way to but candles on her dessert and have the Dining Room sing Happy Birthday...nice touch. Hotel is about to undergo a major refurb and we look forward to returning once this has been done.

The Columba is a pretty good hotel to be fair. After reading the reviews we expected a dodgy Spanish waiter and a joiner with a garden gnome inside him. However what we found that it was very clean, rooms were as per the website, pleasant and had a great view of the port. Upon reading the review regarding the view being good bar the ferry parked infront of the building, what did they expect from a ferry port, did they expect it to be hidden under someones bed? Or perhaps maybe they should remove the poor people next time these guests travel to Africa as they make it look dirty? In general the rooms were very good for a 3 star hotel and staff were helpful enough. The only point I would make is that the exterior is a bit sketchy and the lift comes accross as a death trap but understand they are developing the site and good to see they started with the rooms as most hotels tart up the outside and the rooms do not live up to the exterior.
