Having stayed here with family 21 years ago, we ventured back for one night at the Royal Hotel Oban. Little had changed, except the flat screen TV. Where to begin? The parking lot was filled with broken glass. The hotel roof was being repaired and dripped some fluid onto the dank alleyway. The front desk person started by telling us to go away and come back later. The lift took forever to ferry the hotel's mainly elderly guests and their baggage. The room was large and had a view of the flats next door. The bathroom was clean, unlike the TV remote control - which would have been a nuisance if the remote control worked. The room itself was dusty. The noise from music permeated. The mattress had seen better days. We didn't attempt to eat there - although the dining room was airy and bright. Our reluctant advice: stay elsewhere, while they demolish this place.

we love oban. its our "gateway to the isles".but this hotel is just rubbish. the parking is non-existant ( about 15 spaces ) we were told very rudely that the car park was full, even after two cars had left . how did we know this ? because we were left outside the car park ( outside the barrier ) and saw them leave . rude receptionist only then told us to park on the street . when we checked in 35mins later not even a sorry from rude receptionist. reception looked like it was a ?110 a night hotel but that's where it ended.the stair carpets from floor three were threadbare and the hallways were grubby and smelt of stale food. our room ( 407) was old , stained , bed linen had holes in ,grubby , broken. the shower worked in a fashion you just couldn't adjust it . the only good thing about the room was the view ( took some great sunset views from the window ) but had to wipe the window sill first. breakfast was acceptable as everything was on offer from continental to full scottish . the menu said speciality teas available but when i asked for earl grey ( not uncommon even motorway services have it ) it was not available. i suppose you could not leave the breakfast room hungry as the choice was so varied , something for everyone. so this hotel only rates as a 2/10 and that was because of the breakfast and the view , the latter being natures credit not the royals. we won't be back !!!!
