The Cromwell Hotel - Matlock, United Kingdom 

I stayed at this hotel last night ( 27/3/08 ) on business in the county. Although I read the many bad reports from earlier guests, I though I would try for myself. BIG MISTAKE !!! The hotel is run by one young guy. He does everything from manning the poky reception, checking in, showing guests to the room ( which I will come to later ), cooks the breakfasts, cleans the rooms!!!!!! I mean completely on his own, there is not another member of staff on the premises --- unbeleivable !! I called into a resturaunt, and returned at 9-30. The doors were locked, and all the lights in the building were turned off. It looked like a derilict building. I was finally let in by this poor guy. There was no facilities to provide an evening meal, and the only bar was closed. The room was generally dirty, and it looked as though it hadnt been cleaned in ages. Curtains were hanging off the rails, and couldnt be closed! The wardrobe door was faulty, and had to be wedged closed with a chair. No waste bins or soap provided. Carpets and furniture were filty, even dead bugs on the window cills. The dinning/breakfast room was located at the rear of this building, and only accesable through a series of derilict & empty rooms. Again filty dirty. The carpets still had remnents of Christmas decorations and glitter. Cat or dog hairs on the table cloth. The glass provided for soft drinks was so dirty that I had to clean it before use. The poor sole member of staff then cooked and brought breakfast. A full cooked English - no menu or choice offered ( I could have been vegitarian ). No reflection on the member of staff, but it did cost ?61.00 for the night. Surely unacceptable. I was the only unfortunate guest in this hotel & no wonder. I use hotels in this price range every week, and all over the country, and can state hand on heart that this is the worst, most badly run hotel I have ever had the misfortune to stay in !! I have tried to contact the chain owners - heart hotels, but the website is not reponding? A personal apprasal of this establishment, but completely factual. Try for yourself if brave enough!!!!!!!!

We stayed at the Cromwell this weekend, we booked this hotel directly for a weekend break and was looking forward to staying there. As we arrived at the hotel we was greeted a pleasant young lady who directed us to our room. The room was large and slightly dated decor, the tea and coffee tray was sparingly stocked there was enough for one cup and that was it..... There was no bins in the room and when in the morning when trying to take a shower the water was freezing cold. In the evening when trying to relax we was told there was a flat screen tv in the room which when we first heard that we thought that this wud be enjoyable.........but when we got to the room it was about the same size as an etch a sketch, you needed a telescope to watch and the remote didnt work either, typical. There was one guy who seemed to be everywhere in the hotel from serving drinks to serving food and was a credit to hotel. The young lady on check in was also a credit. On the morning of us leaving we wernt able to have breakfast as no-one was anywhere to be seen and we had to return to room, hungry and annoyed. When in the morning when we told the chef/manager/receptionist (thats one hell of a job description) we was greeted with an arrogrant response 'Im here to cook it for you NOW'. Which was no good to us as we were leaving the feeling of a too little too late was apparant. We would have gladly stayed again and put up with the minor faults of the hotel but the greeting in the morning to no breakfast was the straw that broke the camels back.
