Very cool, old hotel. Breakfast was good and the hotel bar was quite active. Parking was at a city lot around the corner for about 15 quid. Wireless internet is free, but so slow that it was essentially useless. Don't try to VPN with it. Otherwise a great place in the heart of Manchester.

The Britannia Manchester can be a grim hotel experience when staying in a standard room. During our most recent visit, I booked a special rate for an Executive double and kept my fingers crossed. It certainly was a pleasant surprise. While the room was compact, it was newly papered and painted. It was also very clean, even to the corners of the bathroom floor! The bed was comfortable and covered with a fresh, spotless white duvet. It was also blessedly quiet. While breakfast was not included, a Costa was a block away and Starbucks was at the train station. Certainly, this room was basic, no frills accommodation, but for $*per night, we weren't complaining.

Booked the hotel on lastminute.com, we paid extra for have a "luxury" room with air conditioning, god were we disappointed. After travelling for 5 hours we were greeted by staff who could not even bother to look at us... Our room was a box room with bird excrements on the so called duvet. After a 1st complaint, we finally got the room that we paid for only to be greeted by the air conditioning not working and dust in full view. I was so appalled by the condition of the so called 4 stars hotel, obviously the rating must be reviewed. The hotel restaurant where we decided to have dinner on the first night was a disgrace to english cuisine and the service was, what can i say, i've never come across people so rude and unprofessional in my life. I definitely know what i am talking about as i used to work for a big hotel chain which included 3 stars to 5 stars deluxe hotels. The least you expect is some respect as at the end of the day you are the one paying their wages as without guests the hotel will be no more. Since then, we have been back to Manchester with a popular budget hotel and i can tell you that i was pleasantly surprised by the level of service. One advice, is you want to make the most of your stay in a hotel; forget this one, it is not worth a penny as far as i am concerned.
