"Great base for shopping & eating"

This was for a shopping weekend in Manchester - we're a 30 something married couple. We wanted a trendy type place to stay close enough to the shops, but far away enough from the crowds. The hotel was clean, minimalist, ecclectic and relaxing. The room was a standard double, and it was loft apartment like - we really loved it! Flannel curtains, trendy bathroom, comfy bed, nice furnishings. The diners kitchen at the end of the floor was a bit unusual, but we knew about it in advance so made sure we had PJ's to wear for our early morning coffee! The hotel's just a short stroll from the train station, and they let us check in early (10.00). We were able to dump our bag and go straight out! They let us leave our bag with them when we checked out so we didn't have that hassle - other hotels aren't as kind when you stay just 1 night. The other thing we liked is it's only 10 minutes to ChinaTown which is where we wanted to eat (great Thai place called The Royal Orchid. We'd be happy to stay again - we've stayed at the Malmaison, and feel Rosetti has more of a personal touch.

After spending some time researching the hotels on offer in the Northern Quarter of Manchester, I stumbled upon the Abode Rossetti. Despite some of the negative reviews, I chose to take a gamble and I have to say, was pleasantly surprised. The location was very convenient having travelled up to the city by train, and the greeting from reception was most friendly and helpful. The room was more than comfortable and I loved the contemporary style and attention to the smaller details. Breakfast in the morning was excellent and again the staff were on hand to cater for every request. Upon check out we were offered the option of leaving our bags in a secure room whilst we made the most of the shops before our departure. Overall, this was a most pleasant stay and I shall make no hesitation in recommending this hotel to friends and family.

How to waste an opportunity ...

The Rossetti could be good and it is a shame to see that potential being wasted by the current owners. The building is well located and benefits from spacious dimensions. Some areas display considerable character, maintaining some of the charm of this old building. Therefore, as you walk in your hopes are high. That's when it starts to fall down. Where is the check-in desk? Oh, it's that isolated table in the corner round the left hand side with computer cables dangling all of the place. How untidy! Or maybe, just a little quirky - nothing wrong with being unusual perhaps? The bar and restaurant area in front of you looks OK. Then off to the room. I had a spacious corner room and I must admit enjoying the walk up the unexpectedly impressive stairway. On opening the room door the first thing that strikes you is the minimalist style of decor. Nothing wrong with that ... except they have taken minimalist a little too far. The double bed was so short I had to sleep diagonally (across a divide in the mattress down the middle). I'm only 6ft tall and I don't usually have this problem. This was not comfortable - and imagine if I had not been on my own! The pillows were very comfortable though. So, the primary purpose - a good night's sleep - was not achieved. The TV was a complete joke. The cheapest possible (and smallest) TV you could find in any market lurked in the corner. At least I could watch the news, I thought. Silly me. The reception was so bad that all I could see was a snow storm of interference. What a pointless piece of equipment! I was overlooked by offices outside my window, so if I wanted any privacy I had to draw the heavy curtains and turn on the lights. The bathroom was OK and everything was clean, which saved the day. Breakfast was a standard English cooked affair with the usual range of cereals, breads, etc. It was only average in terms of selection and quality but, given the disappointment with the room, I felt quite relieved that it was average. This is one hotel to which I will not be returning - there are a number of better alternatives around.
