I would highly recommend the Southampton Park for anyone needing to be in the centre of Southampton, as all the other city centre hotels here are rather avoidable and more expensive and don't have the excellent leisure facilities that this hotel has to offer. I was staying there to attend a rock concert at the Southampton Guildhall, which is just a few minutes walk across the park, so it is ideal budget accomodation for any music fans going to the Guildhall. Double room including full breakfast as from July 2008 were just ?80 per night and for ?40 per person that is good value for a city centre hotel. The breakfast is a self-service buffet in a small and comfortable breakfast room. The single room I stayed in barely had enough room to swing a cat in and was rather dull and average, with a small bathroom and they forgot to put in any normal coffee along with the free teas provided. Plus there was no air conditioning, which made the place seem like a sauna rather than a comfortable bedroom, but it cooled down later on and the staff explained that there had actually been a problem with the hotel air conditioning a few days before and they were still waiting for it all to be fixed. The hotel bar is lively and prices aren't too bad. The lift is so tiny that only four people can fit into it with a squeeze! What makes up for the shabby bedrooms is the swimming pool, with jacuzzi and gym downstairs. There is also a beauty salon with various treatments on offer and a solarium available for ?5 for 15minutes tanning. Separate steam rooms and saunas are in the mens and womens changing rooms, which make it more private and hygenic. Great leisure club, not so great bedrooms.
