3A pretty well known travel book recommended this hotel. We stayed 3 nights and although it was a quiet, cute, clean hotel; there were some aspects of it that I wish were a little better.
Let's start with some of the good things.
Location - almost dead smack in between Queensway and Notting Hill Gate Tube stations. Notting Hill Gate is nice because it is on the Central, Circle, and District lines. This makes it unbelievably easy to get around greater London.
Staff - Very helpful, very friendly (there was one woman who appeared to be upset all the time, not quite sure what that was all about).
Cleanliness - Hotel was clean, not spotless, but clean. I understand the need to keep these types of hotels authentic, but I do believe it is due for an upgrade. Carpets are starting to show their age, tile is cracking in bathroom, furniture is worn.
Downsides include the following:
Internet access - you are supposed to pay for access, however I was able to get unlimited access every day, it never showed up on the bill and I wasn't going to say something due to the next issue. Telephone...calling local, not internationally, locally was a $12.00 charge on the bill for a 4 minute call. Mind you it was to a mobile, but still, $12.00 seemed a bit steep - even with a horrible exchange rate.
Breakfast - not really what you expect if you were paying $240/night. Very plain, very nondescript English Breakfast. Service was spotty and the food was just OK. I'd recommend walking the 1/2 block to the west and going to Cafe' Diana. We did and loved it every morning!
Beds - Even if you request a double, you are going to get 2 twin beds pushed together. Not really a great way of sleeping - someone always seems to fall into the crack.
Overall, if you are looking for one of the less expensive places to stay in Notting Hill, the Westland Hotel may be for you, just don't expect a lot and you won't be disappointed.
