The Kenilworth - Kenilworth, United Kingdom
The Kenilworth details:
Stunning boutique hotel, pure class, just won 'Theme' 2006 best cocktail lounge and best experience in the Midlands. Some hotels need star ratings. We just go on reputation.
This spectacular boutique hotel is being acclaimed as a contemporary design classic. You will find us conveniently located in the heart of Kenilworth with a wealth of restaurants offering traditional or international cuisine on the doorstep. It has been said, Kenilworth has a deserved reputation for food. It is possible to eat and drink specialties from around the globe in some of the town's award winning restaurants, and in a very close location to the nec. Weekends are busy and you may hear champagne corks popping and crystal glasses chinging, but if you want to enjoy yourself, this is the only place to be. Discover a unique experience of contemporary en-suite bedrooms set within a classic 16th Century building, offering the highest standards of service and facilities including iPod docking stations in selected rooms. The Kenilworth is as much about the cocktail lounge as the luxury accommodation. A throwback to the classic era of Martinis before dinner and service table side. This is our baby. We're proud to present award winning bartenders serving classic cocktails how they should be, served garnished with wit and style (or sometimes a sneer depending what you order!)

I stayed overnight on a Friday as I was working at a conference nearby on both Fri and Saturday. I stayed in the cheapest room (?105 B&B) which was in the main building. The room exactly matched it's photograph and was very attractively decorated in a contemporary style. And the bed was very comfortable!
The staff were very helpful and carried my bags up the rather steep stairs for me and also were very prompt with room service.
(The hotel does not have a large kitchen so sandwiches and nibbles are all that is available but the portions were large and the food fresh.)
The hotel has a funky bar downstairs which was packed on Friday night and had I been a light sleeper and not incredibly tired I think the noise from below would have been a problem. I mentioned this at breakfast and was advised the during the week the bar is empty. (I got the impression the gentleman was surprised I hadn't automatically been put in one of the rooms in the courtyard as the noise is much less apparently. )
Breakfast was continental done to its best; muffins, croissants, white or wholemeal thick sliced bread for toasting, nice orange juice, jams and butter. The fruit selection wasn't extensive but met my needs. Cereal and museli were also available.
There is a small courtyard where you can park your car at the back of the hotel.
All in all a great place to stay.

Yes it was a boutique hotel, and yes the owner was friendly - but when I stay in a hotel I like to get a good night's sleep! We booked a luxury room as a bit of a treat (room 3) - but as it was summer so we had to have the window open and Kenilworth is not a quaint village at night - cars whizzing up and down just below our window, girls drunk and screaming at the top of their voices, drunken blokes shouting - nice!!!
As for the room - well don't book this one if you are claustrophobic, or suffer vertigo as the en-suite is at the top of a steep flight of steps (handy for a trip in the middle of the night) no window, and in the eaves (no good if you're 6 foot tall like me and my husband) and no separate shower! Pillows were so lumpy we both threw them on the floor.
Breakfast was ok - but not a luxury continental breakfast - just a few cereals and croissants & tthe fruit was just in a bowl unprepared. I've stayed in better - but maybe I've been spoit.
