My husband and I stayed for one night at the Bolholt Hotel on Saturday 7th june. We will not be staying there again - ever! We picked the hotel as we have previously stayed in other Best Western hotels and have been very pleased - Beechill Hotel on lake Windermere and others. We were given room 19 which is at the entrance to what I can only describe as a pre-fab block of rooms off the main hotel. The room was next to a fire door and next to the stairs to further upper rooms. there where 10 rooms beyond ours down the corridor. The room its self was basic. The bed was the smallest and most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in, in a hotel. The decor unimpressive but it was clean. We were both tired as we had been guests at our friend's wedding all day. We had not seen the room but had picked up the key and booked in earlier that day on the way to the reception. The room was unbearably hot and stuffy - radiator on full in bathroom. As we were on the ground floor and at the back of the hotel we were reluctant to open the window as they opened fully and anyone could easily step in from outside. We had not been in bed for more than a few minutes when we were disturbed by other guests slamming doors, swearing and banging on other people's doors, shouting obscenities and using ther imagination to describe loudly and vulgarly what they presumed the occupants were up to in bed. Up to 5 am in the morning every 30 mins other guest returned to their rooms in a similar manner- one group did reduce the noise briefly after we told them to shut up. On top of this we had other guests talking loudly outside the room and walking up and down the path outside our window. We also could hear clearly people walking up and down the stairs adjacent to our room until at least 4 am. The breakfast the next morning was the worst I have ever had in a hotel - poor choice of food which looked like it had been there all morning. The black pudding was dry as were the beans. The only eggs available were scrambled. More eggs were uncerimoniously tipped into a heated container with other eggs that were clearly passed their best. The bacon was good. We complained to the receptionist the next morning about the room we had been given - I feel this room should never again be given to any other unfortunate guests. She was totally unsympathetic, unapologetic and said we should have rung the night porter. I said he must be blind and deaf if he did not know what was going on in his hotel. He had obviously occupied a quieter room than us and suggested he might occupy this room in future. We paid the bill in full but advised her how unsatisfied we were with the service we had received. We asked if we could make a complaint there and then but were told that we would have to leave our complaint on the web site which I am now doing. Caroline Heaven
