Location

Viterbo's historic centre is one of the best preserved medieval towns of central Italy. Many of the older buildings (particularly churches) are built on top of ancient ruins. Popular attractions include:

- Papal Palace (Palazzo dei Papi): the palace served as a country residence and a repair in time of trouble in Rome. The columns of the palace are spolia from a Roman temple.

- Cathedral of S. Lorenzo: erected in Romanesque style by Lombard architects over a temple of Hercules. The church houses the sarcophagus of Pope John XXI.

Abandoned in Viterbo by a local hotel (conveniently "lost" our booking) we were desperate to find a room. Fired up my mobile Internet connection and found this, newly opened, Best Western. Phoned them up (receptionist spoke excellent English, as did all the staff we met there) and not only could they accomodate us (a party of 11 needing 5 different rooms) but they volunteered the fact that there was a special offer on at the time, and ensured that we booked at that rate (45E per room per night) We plugged the street adress into the Sat Nav and found the hotel eventually (more our fault than theirs I think, although Viterbo isn't the easiest of places to navigate around) We were checked in quickly, a huge reception area with marble flooring, a bar, comfortable sofas, satellite TV and free nibbles and Internet made a great initial impression. This impression was cemented by our room. A standard rate twin room, we had 2 beds, a plasma screen TV and a nicely appointed bathroom with a powerful shower. The balcony looked out over the town and was a nice source of fresh air, although all the rooms have air-con. There's no restaraunt on site, so reception called a local taxi driver who shuttled us all up to town (drove like Gigi Galli, but only because we asked him to!! In conclusion a great hotel, with good staff and a positive attitude - if only all hotels in Italy were like this!!
