Forest Side Hotel - Grasmere, United Kingdom 

Booked via their website which tells of wonderfull location "situated in wooded estate" and views. Booked a superior room with views. When we checked in the reception staff were OK. We were told that our superior room was 'at the top of the tower', then the adventure started. After climbing the stairs to the summit of the hotel we opened the door to our superior room with expectations of views overlooking the "wooded estate', WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT, our fist shock came with the lack of heat in the room. OK I turned on the convector heater and waited for the heat, and waited. Then our superior view was obnstructed by the iron fire escape and the branches of a large tree (No view). Not to be deterred we set about walking into Grasmere, my wife is now totally disgruntalled. half way down the drive we decided that the room was not what we expected from the description on the website and turned back to reception. We checked out asking for our deposit to be returned without success. MY BEST ADVICE IS DONT GO THERE.

My sister & I stayed for 5 days in July 2007. This hotel is in a wonderful setting - we saw deer EVERY morning from our bedroom window - pure magic! Good hearty breakfast. Very clean rooms & hotel. Lovely friendly and helpful staff. It is a fine Victorian Building. There was plenty of hot water and clean towels. The decor is fitting for the building - it is THOUGHTFULLY furnished and decorated - and pays tribute to the history of the place - to say that it is tired misses the point of it all - it is the old furniture and stripped floorboards and lack of plastic stuff that give this place a wonderful feel. We have booked to return.
