Stayed here for a weekend away, 6 of us altogether.
Good location, just at the back of Princes Street, so good for shopping but all the good pubs seem to be on the far side of town so we had to get taxis every night.
Rooms are big enough, although the halls are quite pokey and claustrophobic. Breakfast is left in the room, cereal, tea/coffee and a piece of fruit.
Reception staff ok, they'd answer you if you asked them a question but you really had to nudge them. There are plenty of leaflets at reception for tours etc. so that was quite helpful. Check in was relatively easy but rooms weren't ready until 3pm which is quite late for a small hotel, we left our bags in a communal, cob web filled, dusty, smelly room which wasn't secure as anyone could have been in going through bags. AVOID at all costs the bar on the side of the hotel as about 3 of us were short changed on more than one occasion and it is quite dirty and smelly, we just had a drink while we were waiting on others to get ready.

Myself and 4 other girls spent one night in the Hanover Hotel on the 23rd Feb 2008. We were travelling to Edinburgh to meet 2 other girlfriend who recomended this hotel as it's very central. On booking we requested adjoining rooms, I called the week before we were due to arrive to make sure we could get them but were told there was no guarantee so I emailed them and everything was sorted.
The rooms were alot better that I expected and quite modern. We had 2 twins with an adjoining door. We were told on booking that there was no breakfast so it wasnt an issue. There is a coffee shop and an american diner across the street where we ate. This hotel was adequate and I would return here although I dont know if I would bring my son who is 4. It has a great location for the Castle, shops, pubs etc. Rooms are clean, tidy and the staff were pleasant. I think it was a bargin at ?70 per room.
My friend booked through laterooms and we paid about £30 each for 1 night at the Hanover - which was a bargain compared to the room rates that are advertised in their tiny reception area. The staff were lovely and friendly and helpful. The Hanover is briiliantly located on Rose Street just behind Princess Street about 5-10 min easy walk from the train station. You have a load of bars / restaurants on your doorstep and all the shops 2 mins away. We were on the 4th floor which is accessed by a small lift. We arrived very early and check in isnt until 3 but they were more than happy for us to leave our luggage in the luggage room (an old unused bedroom that looks nothing like the one your given) and when we left on the Sunday our train wasnt until 3pm check out is at 11am so again it was okay to leave your bags. The room was spotlessly clean the shower was fab like a power shower even though the bathroom was tiny it was perfectly adequate even for me. The beds were really comfy and Scotland was freezing so we used the fleecy blankets we found in our wardrobe.
Negative points - we heard all the bottles being collected in the morning and the window was a bit drafty until we shoved some toilet paper into it to stop it from rattling and once we pulled down the blinds the draft stopped. But i didnt get much sleep from about 5am due to some outside noise (not loads but im a light sleeper)
Plus points - brilliant location, cheap, cheerful, good staff.
Hints - theres a fridge in your room so get some water etc in is a good idea as there is nowhere to buy it in the early hours after youve been to the pub. The only food place we could find out night late on was subway which had hardly any food in and was filled with people from the pub. I would start drinking on Rose street as its much cheaper (about £5.50 for 2 pints) once you go up to george street you could be paying about £9 for 2 drinks.
I would stay at the Hanover again as dont think you could really fault it for a weekend shopping / drinking trip apart from a bit noise (noise external to the hotel as we found the hotel itself really quiet)
