I and my wife had a very pleasant stay at the Royal British Hotel, great location as it was right in the centre of the city with the bus to and from the airport across the road. Staff were great at answering any queries and recommending places.

A major problem--water pipe main broken by road repairers--shut off water for all hotels & a # of homes in area. Our hotel staff handled things calmly, provided bottled drinking water & partial $ compensation to everyone--an indication of their helpfulness in ordinary things, too. The hotel is a bit shabby; but rooms are large & breakfast (ours included in bill) was good. Location can't be beat.

The hotel could do with some refurbishing in this century but the staff was great and breakfast was filling. Also was able to stay on the non-smoking room floor which was a bonus.

A Disappointment

Based on the description on Travel website, we reserved a room at The Royal British Hotel in Edinburgh. It looked rather nice in the pictures. It was a disappointment in every sense. The staff could not be called friendly. The hotel is very run down. The rooms are tiny, with barely enough room to get around. The bed was uncomfortable. The coverlet seemed dirty. It was extremely noisy and quite expensive.

On the plus side, the Royal British hotel is in the perfect location. The staff was excellent. Cleanliness of the room was excellent as well. On the negative side, it showed its age badly. Very much in need of a facelift. Carpeting was very dirty and furniture was very worn. If guests require an elevator, as we did, be aware that it doesn't go to the upper floors. (Staff initiated a room change to a lower floor for us without a request on our part! Very considerate.)
