4Stayed here with my wife on 29 March 2008, when little else seemed to be available in Edinburgh. This is a club formed after WW1 in memory of those who fell. It still retains a kind of gentleman's club atmosphere. The hotel is on Abercromby Place which is possibly the most elegant of all the new town streets. It looks out over the private Queen Street gardens to the south and from the north you can see over the rooftops of the new town and the rest of the city to the Firth of Forth and Fife beyond.
Reception staff helpful and efficient. Our room was on the second floor and there is no lift (though they have plans to put one in) so this would not be ideal for anyone with mobility difficulties. However the room itself, though slightly small, was very nice - clean and well appointed. Excellent bathroom with bath and a powerful shower, and plenty of hot water at all times. The bed was a standard double (a bit small by today's standards) and reasonably comfortable, though equipped with blankets rather than a duvet. Being a residential/business area this was very quiet - you won't be disturbed here by late night revellers.
Braeksfast is in the very grand and elegant members' dining room. There is a choice of fruits, cereals and so on from a good buffet and the fry-up is cooked to order. This came quickly and was good quality and of course much hotter than you get from a buffet. We did not eat in the hotel in the evening - but there is a dress code to be aware of.
Overall I would say this is a little different and very charming in its own way. Also very reasonable value.
