Stayed here with my wife on 29 March 2008, when little else seemed to be available in Edinburgh. This is a club formed after WW1 in memory of those who fell. It still retains a kind of gentleman's club atmosphere. The hotel is on Abercromby Place which is possibly the most elegant of all the new town streets. It looks out over the private Queen Street gardens to the south and from the north you can see over the rooftops of the new town and the rest of the city to the Firth of Forth and Fife beyond. Reception staff helpful and efficient. Our room was on the second floor and there is no lift (though they have plans to put one in) so this would not be ideal for anyone with mobility difficulties. However the room itself, though slightly small, was very nice - clean and well appointed. Excellent bathroom with bath and a powerful shower, and plenty of hot water at all times. The bed was a standard double (a bit small by today's standards) and reasonably comfortable, though equipped with blankets rather than a duvet. Being a residential/business area this was very quiet - you won't be disturbed here by late night revellers. Braeksfast is in the very grand and elegant members' dining room. There is a choice of fruits, cereals and so on from a good buffet and the fry-up is cooked to order. This came quickly and was good quality and of course much hotter than you get from a buffet. We did not eat in the hotel in the evening - but there is a dress code to be aware of. Overall I would say this is a little different and very charming in its own way. Also very reasonable value.

Nice hotel although we had a BIG let down in the morning when we were told we couldn't enter the dining room for breakfast because we had jeans on...very disappointing, we heard the breakfast was great...and of course we had payed for it! Maybe this should be advertised when booking? We weren't prepared for formal dress at breakfast although we had been to a Céilidh the night before but we weren't going to change back into our glad rags again.... A nice stay and location was fab! but we went home hungry!! ;-(

Spent 3 nights at the Royal Scots Club with my mum in a twin room. Initial impressions were excellent as the entrance etc was clearly very historic and interesting. Reception staff were very friendly. Our room was on the top floor and to the rear of the hotel. the view was right out to the Firth of Forth over the roof tops, but below was back yards of other properties. Our room was spacious enough and the beds very comfortable (only downside was the sheets and blankets and no duvets) ,pillows were really plump though! The room was kitted with everything that you would need. The TV wasn't working properly (one channel and no remote), but we were told that the hotel is undergoing TV upgrades. Breakfast was great - very good variety from choice of cereal to all types of hot breakfast dishes all served in/on full china dinner service. Breakfast is served in the members dining room and is quiet a grand affair but a little reserved and quiet for our liking (could of done with some quiet background music) Didn't have chance to sample any other meals at the hotel - too busy out and about in Edinburgh. Location of the hotel was in the new town and just a few minutes walk up a slight incline to Queens Street/George Street, which runs parrell with the street that the hotel is on Overall, the hotel was very traditional and oldy worldy and slightly reserved, but we would definately stay again.
