The Mount Royal has received differeing reviews over recent months but i get the impression this is only because of current renovation work that is being carried out in an unconspicuous manner. The staff were very helpful, pleasant and accomodating. We arrived early in the day due to travel arrangements and went to reception, although we couldn't check in, bearing in mind we were 6 hours before scheduled check in they did their best but didn't get a room. We stored our luggage and took in the sights of edinburgh. Upon returning we had been upgraded to a suite with castle veiw and private balcony over princes street without asking for it. Superb location for sightseeing and shopping, great bus service from airport to waverly station, 100 metre walk to hotel. Overall a well run hotel. would definietly stay again.

We stayed here on a 3 day weekend break to Edinburgh. As we arrived by train, the location could not have been better as it was literally across the street from the main station Our room was very clean and comfortable. We had a nice view of the castle and although they are in the process of refurbing the outside of the building, the scaffolding didnt get in the way Staff were friendly and welcoming and the room was cleaned each day. We had a flat screen TV, usual tea and coffee facilities and nice powerful shower Breakfast was excellent - plenty of options from full cooked buffet breakfast to cereal and fresh fruit etc. Its a great location as its right in the middle of the city and ideal base to explore on a sightseeing trips I would stay here again if I was returning to the city - can't complain about anything.

Mediocre
Get a room on a high floor if you don't like cigarette smoke or noisy street!

Stopped here a few times on business as the location is right by where I need to go for work (Prince's St). The location is both an advantage and disadvantage insofar as it's central and convenient, but also on a very busy street and bus route. Buses (and drunks!) literally go up and down all night and it can be impossible to sleep on the lower floors. The lower floors are also smoking rooms - I was put in one and couldn't stand it so was moved to a high floor exec room which was much better. You still get the fab view of the castle but not the smoke or as much of the noise. The hotel is being renovated I believe. The standard rooms are nothing special a bit shabby to be honest but the exec rooms are really nice and contemporary. and worth paying the extra for. The breakfast /dining area is like a 1980s nightclub but it's perfectly functional. Breakfast is very cheap at only ?8.95 compared to ?20+ for some hotels. Great selection. Decent 3* hotel, accommodating and pleasant staff. Not bad. Best for tourists rather than business visitors I'd say as the street noise might prevent a good night's sleep.
