Hawthorne Dene Hotel - Falmouth, United Kingdom 

Booked this at a cheap rate of ?58 a night B&B for a two night stay. I’m glad we got the cheap rate because the rack rate would have been disappointing. The positives to this hotel – good location as a base for exploring the area especially by car, sufficient off road parking, pleasant lounge area (although may have been good to have a tv in there as well), ensuite bathroom has large fittings (great shower!) and was clean and tidy despite being quite small, room was an average size, had character (selection of books provided in the room) and looked like it had been recently painted although d?cor is a bit dated (maybe this is part of the character?), nice tea/coffee tray available in the room, newspapers available at breakfast and vegetarian sausages on offer as well. Downsides to this hotel – although the welcome we got was efficient it wasn’t very warm and this seemed to be the same throughout the stay, bedspread was soiled when we checked the room and although it was changed straight away with apologies it did spoil the first impressions of the room, husband’s bedside light had no on switch, cooked breakfast was very ungenerous (served on a side plate so that’s an indication of portion size) and although I was only having three pieces of the cooked breakfast this didn’t mean the portion size of each element was increased to compensate (instead the side plate came and looked half empty – my husband said he hoped I wasn’t very hungry! And when I asked for mushrooms, I was literally given one mushroom sliced). I think this place has been given a 4- AA rating because it can put a tick in the boxes rather than because they put the extra effort to make you feel it is a 4-rating. It was a challenge to get a smile from the lady at the front desk throughout the stay – she looked the most animated when she was waving goodbye! Saying that, it seemed popular with other guests as both nights we stayed here they were full even though we weren’t staying in the main peak season.

We stayed at the Hawthorne Dene in April of this year and must say we were really impressed. We had a warm welcome and loved the character of the building. Over all our stay was very comfortable with lovely food and service.
