Location
The Royal Hotel, sitting proudly on the Eastern side of Bideford's Ancient Bridge, has a long history. The writer Charles Kingsley wrote much of his famous novels, The Water Babies and Westward Ho! at the hotel. Bideford, which he described as 'The Little White Town', is just a short walk across the river and is a great place to explore.
Alternatively, you could board the Kathleen and May, a beautifully restored 3-masted Schooner which makes its home on Bideford quayside.

I stayed at this hotel for one night at the end of April whilst in the area on business.
Positives:
Staff were very friendly and helpful.
The hotel has a lot of character and is very clean
Location is great, right next to the river
Food was great quality, breakfast was particularly nice
Satellite TV and wireless broadband (not free) available
Negatives:
Bedroom decor needs updating (floral bedspreads and curtains are not very contemporary).
Bathroom seriously needs updating (shower attachment on bath taps and olive-green bathroom suites!)
Restaurant was quite formal (I was allocated a specific table for both meals)
Wireless broadband connection regularly fell over.
Hotel perhaps slightly overpriced?
Having said this, the rooms were very clean and well furnished and I would recommend this hotel to others and use again myself when next in the area.
