Hotel Le Cro-Magnon - Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, France 

We spent two nights in early December in Les Eyzies, and while the weather was awful, the hotel was lovely. We basically had it to ourselves, as this is not a touristy time of year, but the family did an amazing job of making us feel welcome. The room was large, well-furnished and spotlessly clean. It was also warm, which we appreciated considering the weather outside. Dinner in the hotel's restaurant was excellent; good selection, well presented and delicious; very good wine list. We will definitely be back -- if only to see Alice, the family's shih-tszu that I was tempted to smuggle home...

I booked a room at this hotel after reading numerous good reviews in a variety of publications. However, on arriving at the hotel in on a very hot July day, we were told that they did not have a pool any longer due to a change in management (something they had ommited to mention in their information sheet!) Therefore if a pool in sweltering heat of south western France is important to you, you may want to look elsewhere. The hotel is also right on the busy main road into Les Eyzies and there is a LOT of noise during the night.
