2Having spent hours researching places to stay and reading reviews, I finally booked the Ascot Opera based mainly on the feedback on this site about its location.
As a female travelling alone, location was key to my search, as was value for money and ease in getting from Paris CDG airport to my hotel as I had quite a heavy bag.
Got the Roissy bus from CDG at a cost of justover 8 euros. Not bad for a 45 min trip into the city. Private taxis were charging others 85 euro, The bus driver did not speak much English, if at all, and don't expect much help at the airport if you are flying from the UK. The part we flew into was deserted with no signs, maps or anything.
Roissy bus drops you right at the Opera House, and from here I thought finding the hotel using the map on the website would be easy. Not so.
The Opera area is BUSY and it takes a while to get your bearings. I've travelled a lot and this was difficult. I ended up walking an extra 2 miles with my 20kg bag, to then get a taxi which took me back the way I had walked!
Finally arrived, man at check in was nice enough, but just did the standard check in. No map, didn't even tell me what floor my room as on.
Lift is small. My bag and I only just fit.
The lobby is OK, 70's style and small with a sitting area next to check in. Apparently breakfast is sevred there but I didn't know that until my last day.
Now for the room. I booked a single room for just under 500 euros for 5 nights. This room was small. Tiny.
I don't mind staying in small rooms and I understand European hotels are small but this really was ridiculous and I would strongly urge you to get a double room if you are considering staying here. The room was about 1.5m wide and maybe 3.5m long. The toilet and shower were squahed into a built in wardrobe, I'm not kidding. The decor was tired, wallpaper peeling off, dirty worn carpet. For what I paid, i couldn't help but think I'd been had and could have probably stayed in better places. I considered the Royal Opera and a few Best Westerns and wish I had have chosen them.
The hotel is old and wall paper thin. I was in Room 20, next to the stairs and I truly did not sleep for more than 2 to 3 hours each night. The hotel is in a quiet street but the nosie within the hotel was astounding. Cleaners vacumming outside your door at 7.30am each day, people up and down the stairs, toilets flushing.. You hear it all. The rooms are extremely overheated during the night, which is something I'd read before but never thought about but my goodness it makes it hard to sleep. The uncomfortable bed doesn't help either and I can usually sleep anywhere. By my last few days I was delirious and it had put a slight on my trip to Paris.
Location is about all I can say about the hotel, but then again, with so many hotels in Paris, I think you're bound to get pretty good location at many others. There's a min market, pharmacy and great English-speaking pasta shop nearby. There are also hundreds of other 2 and 3 star hotels around which I would prfer to try.
Being new to Paris, the only area I knew of was Opera and booked around there. However, I ended up spending more time on the left bank in the St Germain area and in the Marais area around the Rue de Rivoli. Its more authentic here, fun, busy and less touristy and I would much rather have stayed there.
Breakfast at the hotel was 10 euro and the service was bad. I was there for 15 mins and only had a bowl of cornflakes and glass of juice. I tried to ask the waitress for the breads and spreads that some others had but she ignored me. I got the shuttle bus to Orly airport which cost 25 euros, the hotel takes 7 euros of this just for booking it for you so I'd recommend booking your own. Just search online and there are plenty in English.
I was glad to check out and slept very well on the plane!
Tips for Paris in general:
Food and generally interesting streets: Rue de Buci and Rue de Seine in St Germain - great!
Shops (boutique clothes etc): Rue de Francis Bourgeois
Tours: I did Bike About Tours and Paris Walks which were great, informative and fun. And cheap too! High recommended.
