Omni Cancun Hotel & Villas - Cancun, Mexico     

This was the last hotel we stayed at during our two week trip to Cancun. We also stayed at the Intercontinental Presidente and the Moon Palace, both of which I reviewed on tripadvisor as well. We had specific dates booked at the Moon Palace in a presidential suite but got really cheap flights by flying mid-week, enough savings to extend our trip by an additional week for very little more. So we booked the Presidente through priceline for two nights and booked the Omni through Costco for five nights. We were a little skeptical from the various reviews of the Omni. Then our driver from the airport the first day saying that the Presidente is a much better hotel than the Omni, and then having a very disappointing experience at the Presidente during our first two days in Cancun. But we were pleasantly surprised with the Omni overall! The hotel is clean, the rooms are spacious, the pools were decent, the beach was to our liking (more details below), and food was decent. We were upgraded to oceanview rooms through our Costco package, and we got just that. The view was amazing! We could just sit on the balcony for hours and just enjoy the view. Of course we didn't because there was so much we wanted to do. The rooms were pretty spacious compared to other hotels in Cancun. We're also Omni select members, so we got free internet access, free morning beverages, and free daily paper. The pools were nice and deeper than others in Cancun, which the adults liked more than the kids. The kids pool was just okay with a large mushroom-like waterfall. The best thing about the pool was the built-in loungers that were several inches in the water so you could soak up some sun, do some reading, and cool off in the water all at the same time. The beach sand was a lot coarser than at the Presidente or the Moon Palace. But there were actual waves here compared to the Presidente, so it was nice sitting by the beach or out on our balcone and just listening to the waves crashing. I prefer this type of beach over the calm water type. The hotel only has one main restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffet-style; one beach-side outdoor restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch; one pool bar/restaurant that serves pizza, burgers, nachos, etc.; and one nicer formal Italian restaurant for dinner. The prices were on the expensive side, but we had $125 food and beverage credit per room through our Costco package and then did the "vacation club" (ada timeshare) presentation and got an additional $300 credit. Those credits paid for all of our meals during our stay except a couple of lunches and dinner outside the hotel. The service was great overall. The only problems we encountered were with housekeeping. They didn't clean our rooms until late afternoon around 5 pm everyday, just as we were getting back from the pool or from an afternoon out on the town. Then they would come knocking on our door to do the turn-down service around 9-9:30 pm just as our kids were about to go to sleep. Overall, it was a nice stay. However, we probably wouldn't stay here again just because it's more economical for us to go all-inclusive and it's just not worth it at this hotel because of the limited restaurant options. It is a nice place though for those looking for a quieter place to stay in the hotel zone and for those that aren't into drinking and eating as much.

So we got a Costco offer for Cancun and the Omni Hotel was listed as a 3+ start hotel. so we booked and went... here is what i have found... GOOD: 1. Hotel staff is great... 2. If you ignore the request to attend/call the timeshare people you are ok. 3. rooms is great, great view, great hotel and so much more than i thought it would be. Bad: 1. Having a child with you is a bit hard since they will give you a crib (pack your own sheets) but some places you can't to to with a stroller you may have to pick it up and walk it down the stares but the staff will help you if they see you. 2. pools are not heated 3. beach still had big rocks while other hotel got them removed (issue in Cancun from what i was told) other than that we enjoyed everything about it... i have a collection of photos of the hotel listed on my flickr account check them out at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dawouds/sets/72157604676976317/ enjoy George
