Residenz Hotel Dusseldorf was a basic, inexpensive hotel ($60/night via Expedia). Located halfway between the Main Railstation hbf and the D wehuhahn station (Sbahn 1, 6, 7 (airport), 11). From the main rail station, you turn right and it is about a 5 minute walk. The neighborhood is OK, with shops and restaurants nearby. A grocery store (Kaiser - AP affiliated) is near the hotel (closed on Sundays).
The hotel is 6 stories and my single room was on the 6th floor. The elevator goes up the 5th floor and walk up 1 flight of stairs. My room, 64, was clean but a little bit small and triangular in shape. Part of the wall was at a slant. The bathroom was small but functional. The hotel uses card (room) keys.
Being on the 6th floor was beneficial, as I was higher above traffic noise. I didn't notice the noise of the street.
I believe the layout of the rooms are the same on each floor. If so, the rooms that end with 4 (14, 24, 34, 44, 54, 64) are corner rooms, facing a busy intersection. Rooms that end with 0 (10, ..., 60) may be quieter, as they face a less busy street.
The price includes a decent breakfast buffet; breads, cold cuts, coffee, juice, cereal, fruit (canned not fresh).
The location was ideal, as the rail station is the transportation hub, trams, rail, Ubahn, Sbahn. There is a tourist office accross the street from the train station (also city tour starts by the tourist office). Used the Dusseldorf Welcome card (14 Euro - 48 hours) for museum attractions and unlimited transporation. I would recommend going the the Neanderthal musuem which is 15 minute away via S 28.
For the price and location, the hotel was a very good value.
