Because of World Cup Rugby, all the hotels near the city center were booked or charging outrageous rates. But I'm glad I found the Mercure Porte d'Orleans. This was my third visit to Paris, so I was somewhat familiar with the metro system. The hotel is on the southern perimeter of Paris in a lively and diverse neighborhood near the university. If you want to be away from the touristy areas, this is a good place. To find the hotel from the metro station: -once you exit the station, head down Av. Aristide Briand. You will pass a bus stop and a Total petrol station. If you see a Novotel, you are heading in the right direction. -turn left on the street past the Novotel -Rue Francois Ory is two streets down. You'll see a Hotel Ibis. Places to eat: -there are many restaurants in the area and around the metro station, including a Chinese buffet adjacent to the hotel. -there are several supermarkets in the area Internet: The hotel has a business center, but they charge for internet use. When I was there, it wasn't working, so they sent me next door to Ibis which also wasn't working. The desk clerk directed me to a internet place down the street which was much cheaper. Getting around: Metro Line 4 takes you to Gare du Nord (Eurostar) but it makes 19 stops. However the trains are fast and efficient. From CDG airport, I suggest the B line, then connect to Line 4 at Denfert Rochereau. Musee d'Orsay: nice way to spend an afternoon. You can take photos of the artwork but no flashes allowed. The top floor has a spectacular view of the river and the Sacre Coeur (Montmartre).
