Royal Barriere address: Boulevard Cornuché, Deauville, 14800

Royal Barriere details: Built in 1913, at the height of La Belle Époque, when Deauville was a magnet for the wealthy and stylish of Europe, the impressive façade of the hotel still presides over this elegant town.

Situated directly opposite three kilometers of superb sandy beach, edged by the famous Planches, the Royal Barrière has something to offer everyone. The impeccable standards of service exceed those expected in a luxury hotel and are matched by the magnificence of the décor, which has been the subject of a major renovation.

As the nearest resort to the capital, Deauville remains a favorite destination for fashionable Parisians. The clientele now also includes the international jet set when the American Film Festival is hosted here each September.

The whole hotel has been decorated by famous interior designer Jacques Garcia.

Discover a new style of contemporary luxury in a sumptuous 1900 architectural setting. This palace offers you the best of both worlds: authentic tradition and modernity. As a meeting place for international Jet-Setters, the Royal Barrière is a central attraction in Deauville. A lavishly decorated striking building, the distinctly elegant Royal Barrière really deserves its palace-status on the Normandy coast. Reviving the palatial myth, we receive all our guests as stars.

The Royal Barriere is from a bygone era, and while it was fun to visit, I would have preferred it to have lived up to what it might have been in the past. We got a good rate through a reseller, about half again as much as we would have paid at the Mercure. We had a beautiful view from our room, overlooking the beachfront (there is a pool, exposition areas, and low buildings in front of the hotel; the water is some distance away). The room was very pleasant and clean. But the hotel's age shows in gentle ways. The floors are uneven, doors don't close, soundproofing is not the best. The bed seemed hard and a bit lumpy. The clientele seems to be made up mostly of rather tough-looking men from all corners of the globe. And there are all sorts of extra charges for internet, for example, although parking was free. Barriere's logo graces this hotel, the casino, the Normandy, the beachfront bars, and tennis courts-- the net effect is not one of elegance, but of desperate tawdriness. The restaurant was wonderful, and expensive-- it definitely deserved its michelin star. The breakfast, however, was a disappointing buffet that had the beneficial effect of forcing us to enjoy the cafes around downtown on other mornings.

This was a rally nice hotel. We were spending 2 nights in the Normandy region and I had to find a town and a hotel that would be suitable for our trip. After much research I decided upon the Royal Barriere and was not disappointed. The rooms were large and quaint at the same time. It felt clean but was a little worn. It might be time for new carpeting??? The bathrooms were wonderful—no complaints there. The lobby was gorgeous; however the restaurant was over priced. We opted to walk to the cute little restaurants in town. One little tea house that we fell in love with was the Du Pont. We had breakfast there and also stopped for coffee during our shopping times. We drove over to Omaha Beach and also to a few of the small towns. We loved Deauville, and Honfleur. They were very beautiful and picturesque.
