Location

Rumwell Manor is the perfect base from which to explore the seemingly endless variety of attractions to be found in Somerset and the adjacent counties. You could visit Hestercombe Gardens, one of Britain's premier garden sites, with 3 complete period gardens - Georgian landscape, Victorian terrace and a formal Edwardian garden.

Sheppy's Cider Farm Centre is a popular tourist attraction just down the road from the hotel. Also nearby is The Donkey Sanctuary, a haven for donkeys that have been mistreated, neglected, retired from working on the beaches or simply cannot be cared for any longer by their owners.

Further places to explore include Montacute House and Gardens. Built from golden ham stone, this Elizabethan mansion has been used as the setting for many period dramas. It is well worth a visit as are the many other historic houses and gardens in the area.

At West Somerset Steam Railway you can enjoy a nostalgic journey through 20 miles of glorious Somerset countryside, perhaps stopping off at any of the stations between Bishops Lideard and Minehead. Exmoor is the land of wild red deer and legendary home of Lorna Doone. Amongst the open moorland you can visit Tarr Steps, a stone slab clapper bridge dating from prehistoric times which crosses the River Barle.

Rooms

The main house rooms are located in the original Georgian Manor House and offer a choice of double or twin bedded rooms, with a romantic four-poster also available. These 10 superior rooms are particularly spacious, with delightful views of the surrounding countryside or the landscaped gardens.

The courtyard wing is situated just a few paces to the rear of the main house, across a cobbled walkway. This wing contains all standard bedrooms, all 10 of which are comfortably decorated and furnished. Whilst these rooms may be more compact than those in the main house, all offer either double or twin beds and a number have convenient ground floor access, although none are specifically modified for disabled use.

We arrived Sunday night. It is a lovely country house hotel but felt the place needed redecorating and upgrading. The plug was coming out of the wall and the bathroom was dated. The decor was generally tired. It was lovely and quiet for sleeping but the restaurant and bar lacked atmosphere for dinner, so went into Taunton to find another place to eat. The guy on reception was pleasant enough and the ladies were very friendly. We had a minor incident over where we could sit for breakfast that could have been handled better, but he was a teenager:( The breakfast was OK but the cut grapefruit was dried out, so not as fresh looking as it could be.
