Have stopped at the hotel a few years previously, so used it again on the recommendation of friends who said it was being up-graded by the owner. We arranged to stay one night as a stop-over back to the U.K. and check-in on a Sunday afternoon. We were greeted by a locked door with a keypad and no code + no sign, no nothing. We rang the hotel on our mobile phone at great expense and the owner said he was with his family on the beach and could not check us in for over two hours! The hotel is being up-graded but could not see much improvement - it reminded me of a Youth Hostel. Hotels in Calais are looking tired; this is no exception. Poor reception, no aplology and no smiles from any of the staff - they still want top money despite "work in progress". My advice is to keep going and sleep on the ferry - at least the Captain hopefully won't be on the beach!
