The Chateau de la Pioline is unquestionably a stunning building set in wonderful, private grounds, a short drive from central Aix and rich in history.
Finding it is another matter! Our SatNav took us to the middle of a ghastly, busy retail park and told us we had arrived. Indeed we had - a notice board took us down a short drive to electronically-controlled gates, a sort of Narnia wardrobe experience, which transported us into the hotel grounds. Presumably one day in the recent past this had all been fields. No longer, alas.
The welcome and reception was excellent and we were taken to our large 'garden' room, a huge bedroom with double doors opening out on to the garden. Great for the summer, but not much use in February.
Room fittings were luxurious - bathrobes, two basins, large bath, flat-screen TV etc, and there was sense of being somewhere special.
So where did the hotel let itself down? Two main areas. Firstly, the room itself. When you looked more closely you could see things that were not right - fridge not working, room heating not working, inadequate lighting, towel rail coming off the wall, small ants on the bedside table etc - it just all needed a bit more care and attention.
Secondly, although dinner in the award-winning restaurant was superb, the breakfast experience was frankly dreadful. We have never paid so much in France (20?) for such a poor selection, bad service, noisy surroundings (compressor on cooling unit) and unclean tableware/cloths. There was not a single hot dish available, butter, jam and cheese were all in plasticised packs, and on the first day there were even no croissants. The breakfast in a way let down everything else, so the hotel needs to pay some attention to this. We were very close to going to have breakfast elsewhere.
In general we would recommend this hotel, but it is probably best used in the warmer months of the year when breakfast can be taken outside. Hopefully the hotel do this rather better.
We also managed to secure a substantial discount on the (otherwise expensive - 165?) room by contacting the hotel direct. The hotel's offer matched what was available on popular internet hotel discount sites - 110? (without breakfast!)

a éviter
