Requena is considered to be the authentic "Door of the Plateau". Its landscape is characterised by pine groves, fountains and springs and the River Magro is the most significant geographical unevenness of this plain. Requena is also one of the most extensive municipal term of Spain, with an area of 816 square metres and an average height above sea level of 692 metres.
It is situated between the plateau and the Mediterranean sea, which is just 63 km away. Crop areas can be found throughout the whole plain, mainly vineyards, which are the basis of Requena’s economy.
During recent excavations, remainings of the Iberian and Roman period have been found. However, the origin of its name is due to the strong Arabic influence: "Rakkana", which means "strong, secure".
The neighbourhood of the Villa was declared historic-artistic complex in 1966 due to the significance of its buildings and churches. The "Alcazaba", the "Medina" and the "Arrabales" are the most notable historic buildings of this ancient fortified Muslim place of the Caliphal period.
Under the square of the Villa’s ground you will find the Caves of the Villa that were used as underground stores, shelters, ossuaries and wine cellars for wine preservation and elaboration.
