This hotel was fabulous!! My cousin has lived all her life in Madrid and when I asked her to help me out with a hotel she told me stay in Gran Velazquez...she said "do not stay in a hotel in the Gran Via because it's not a very good place to walk at night time". When I went online and saw the room pictures, I was not impressed, but being the case that she has lived all her life there, I knew it had to have a charm. Was she right! Ask to stay on one of the rooms that are double, but bigger (I believe they call it a junior suite. The beds are very comfortable and very spacious (you rarely find this in Europe). It also had a farely big balcony. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. You also have a butler that is a very good magician!! Our trip consisted of 5 hotels (one of them in Barcelona which we paid $400.00/night) and at the end of our trip, we asked each one of us...."what hotel did we like best? The four of us said "Gran Velazquez"!

Well located.. that is it There is no way you can sleep in those terrible beds. They must be fifty years old. Bathroom smells awful. We had to move to another hotel and lost our money for the remaining nights.

Away from the crowds but close to transportation. Both the Metro and the Hop On/Hop Off Bus had a stop in Salamanca. Easily walkable to everything. The suite was an extra bonus and the balcony overlooking the street. Only problem was that the staff was not fluent in English - had a little difficulty communicating
