First time I had stayed at Castilla II. I stayed two nights. The location was great. The personnel during the day was very competent and helpful, but during the night was a disaster. I believe that during the day family personnel were in charge. I didn't like the noise of the hotel during the night. Girls screaming like they were having sex. I did complain during the night shift and management said: I am sorry but they didn't do anything at all. I really appreciated that when we went to Rome they kept our luggage for a week without charging us anything. This was very nice from them. During nights there were no lights on the halls and I almost had an accident waiting for the elevator. Phones were not working at all. The air conditioning was not working at all. Front desk was at another building and you need to cross the street to use the internet. Overall was not what I expected.
Good accommodations for the price. The showers had hot water! I would suggest a clothes dryer and some new towels so that linens weren't so hard. I really appreciated having the internet access. The staff was helpful!
Castilla II is on a back street, a couple of streets away from the busy Plaza del Sol. I found it easy enough to sleep but my Dad, who's a light sleeper, was disturbed by discussions late at night (2-3am) outside our window (1st floor). We asked next day if we could have a quieter room and they moved us across the road to Castilla III, with a 4th floor room not overlooking the road, which was a good bit quieter. Still occasional noise from the neighbours, and one or two banging doors late at night, but my Dad was happy enough.
This being a hostal with no breakfast, you're largely left to fend for yourself, but the staff were helpful with tourist-type requests as well as the room change. There's a vending machine which dispenses hot drinks (until it runs out) and free internet access on one PC.
Overall, I thought it was good value for money (in the budget category) and the location was great, so I'd stay there again. Recommended to anyone who's not too light a sleeper :-)
