1.5The Gran Via is in the heart of historical Madrid, within walking distance from almost everything, but the Hotel tryp is definitely NOT recommendable.
Ok, it's not their fault if the hotel is located at the corner of Calle de la Montera - an infamous pedestrian area of Madrid, populated by a collection of ugly street hookers; after all, maybe you like the idea (and there's a great restaurant, the Gloria de Montera, within few metres).
Also, maybe they cannot get rid of the group of tattooed cracks permanently sitting-in exactly in front of the hotel entrance (I regularly visit Madrid, and personally verified they're always there - month after month after month).
But their rooms are unforgivably small, and this IS their responsibility. By "small" I mean than your single room can be so short that beyond your bed you can't even fit a chair; and so narrow that if you open your suitcase flat on the floor, it will fill all the remaining space, and you'll have to stay on your bed.
The same architectural style applies to the bathroom as well. Unless you're quite shorty, you'll have to open your legs wide while sitting on the closet, not to bump your knees on the wall in front of you (but if you're particularly tired, you can lean on the wall while pissing).
Considering that all this fun comes for not less than 100? (including a disgusting tortilla stink, which catches you at the lobby and doesn't leave you even at the highest floors), I definitely recommend to choose another hotel.
