Location

City Centre, Near Exhibition Centre

Las Ramblas (2.8 km) - It is Barcelona's centrepiece, the kilometre-long pedestrian boulevard flanked by narrow traffic lanes which runs from Placa Cataluna to the Columbus statue. The starting point and focus of most visitors' stay in Barcelona, the Ramblas is lively throughout the day and night with a huge selection of bars, restaurants, the prestigious El Liceu theatre and unique street performers who range from surreal human statues and card tricksters to talented artists and musicians.

Gothic Quarter (3.3 km) - This is the heart of the city. The reason it is one of the most frequently visited areas in the city is largely due to 2 squares. One is a square aptly named for the cathedral that rises up from its centre; the other is Plaça Sant Jaume, Barcelona's administrative centre and home to the City Hall and the seat of the Generalitat (Catalonia's autonomous government).

The Raval (2.4 km) - For a long time this was a rather marginalised area. Nowadays a few troubled spots still exist in the so-called Barrio Chino. However, a concerted effort at urban rehabilitation changed the face of the Raval and set out to draw attention to the cultural points of interest that this area has to offer. The Center de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (center for contemporary culture or CCCB) and the museu d’art contemporani dbarcelona (museum of contemporary art or macba) are the clearest examples of this change, which is also reflected in the growing number of art galleries and designer boutiques.

Barceloneta (3.6 km) - It is the old fisherman's quarter of Barcelona where the old port meets the beach. The area has among the best fish restaurants in town and a long sandy beach which is popular all year round with sunbathers, windsurfers, joggers and cyclists and particularly lively in summer when the beach bars (chiringuitos) open up.

The hotel in which we stayed was the AC Vilamari in Barcelona. We stayed there from the 30.10.07 to 2.11.07. I will briefly explain why we were so unhappy. My partner and I were involved in a robbery scam within one hour of arriving in Barcelona. When we eventually arrived at the AC Vilamari we were greeted by a receptionist called Maria, who was very kind and helpful. We had already paid for our stay at the hotel, which was good as we had no money at all(apart from £25 in sterling, (which we found out later was worthless) All of our money, passports and many valuables had been stolen. For the next 28 hours we both went hungry as we had no money and we had to wait for some money to be transferred from the UK. The following morning we waited in the hotel reception to receive a phone call from the UK. We asked about breakfast, but were told by the man behind the desk that because we had NOT paid for breakfast we would not be allowed one. (Obviously we would have paid once we received some money from the UK) The staff did not even offer us a hot drink. They could clearly see that we were unhappy and distressed. My partner even had £25 sterling in his pocket and asked if the hotel could possibly change that, but again we were told that was not possible as we had no identification. You can imagine how we felt. We expected better of the 4* hotel Vilamari and were both very disatisfied with how this situation was handled. I am sure in some hotels we would have been given a hot drink and even food after what had happened to us. It is just a pity that the reception staff felt unable to help us. The ONLY member of staff who was truly helpful and kind was Maria. It is a pity she wasn't on duty when we needed her!! For that we would like to thank her. But I am afraid I will not be recommending The Vilamari. For such a "lovely" hotel.... it is a pity that the reception staff and management did not show greater kindness to 2 very distressed tourists to Barcelona. I will also be forwarding my views to Expedia, the company from where we booked the holiday.
