Győr is to be found in the North-Westen part of Hungary, in the heart of Kisalföld it rises out like an island, where the three rivers (Rába, Rábca, Mosoni-Duna) meet. It is inhabited since the ancient times, during the Roman times it was called Arrabona, although originally it was a Celtic settlement. It always played a central role due to its natural and other conditions. At the time of István the First (round 1000) a bishopric and a bailiff of estate was put up on this place, then in 1271 István the Fifth gave privilege to the settlement.
It became important in 1529 in the point of the militar , at this time the town was burned up and became it's new name from the Turk: Janik-Kala = Burnt town.
After the Turkish danger Italian masterbuilders gave a new aspect to Győr in an old renaissance style, which style labels we can still see.
Due to it's geographical placing commercially it became more and more important.
At the end of the 17th century it was written down /known as the most beautiful baroque town in Europe.
In the 1753 Mária Terézia rose the today's county town on the rank of a free royal town.
In the 19th century industrial upswing and then the change of regime gave once more a rate of progress to the town. Győr has a double aspect thanks to it's historical past and favourable conditions.
The double aspect comes out in it's intimate historical downtown - with renovated houses and narrow streets - but also in it's importance in the developed industrial and commercial center of the Middle-Easten Europe.
