The Oban Caledonian Hotel - Oban, United Kingdom 4 star hotel

Address: Station Square, Oban, PA34 5RT
The Oban Caledonian Hotel details:  Oban’s landmark hotel, this historic building is ideally located close to the ferry port and train station, offering 4-star accommodation and some fantastic views of the waterfront.

Possibly the finest hotel in Oban, the Oban Caledonian Hotel commands some breathtaking views over the sheltered bay of Oban to the hills of Scotland’s magnificent west coast. The gentle grandeur of this famous property has long extended a warm welcome to travellers arriving or departing by sea, rail or land. Now carefully refurbished and under family ownership, this fine hotel offers stylish, contemporary comfort and service. Gaze seaward as the sun slips behind the Hebridean hills and a friendly Highland hospitality unfolds.

Discover the hotel’s Harbourside Restaurant or choose the informal Café Caledonian – relaxed during the day and lively at night. Ideally situated on the waterfront, the hotel is the perfect gateway for exploring Argyll and The Isles.

The history of the hotel is fascinating; it was completed around 1882 with the arrival of the West Highland Railway in Oban. The hotel was originally known as The Station Hotel and was owned by the Campbell family who retained ownership until the 1950's. During the Second World War the hotel was requisitioned by the Royal Navy as their base in the town. Oban was a major base for transatlantic Convoys, a large RAF base was established at Connel in association with this and Oban was also the base for the famous flying boats. At the same time as the hotel was built the Royal Highland Yacht Club was established and the Hotel continues to be the base for this regatta. During the 1960's the building was renamed as The Caledonian Hotel and at this time was one of the first hotels in the Highlands to boast 'a motorised lift and central heating'.

In 2002 it was closed for major rennovations and now offers stylish, contemporary comfort and service. The hotel has 59 rooms, many with fine views over Oban Bay to the mountains of Mull and Ardgour.

The location and setting is great, but that’s the best we can say. Having stayed at this hotel a number of times in the past it was a shock to see how worn and run down the hotel had become. The contemporary window covers in the dining room (a la Charles Rennie Mackintosh design) were shockingly dirty and stained. Window sills in the room were in desperate need of a cleaning and a paint job. Perhaps this will all be fixed when the back side of the hotel is finished, however, a bit of care could make it much better until that occurs. We’d been promised sea view rooms - well, we did view the sea if we sat tight to one side of the window & peered around the corner. The rooms had been booked many weeks before. The room had no movement of air which meant leaving the window open which also meant listening to the yelling and disturbances from the late revellers across the street, not to mention the uninvited vist of hordes of flies. The bar man was anything but friendly or professional. We waited ages before our bar snacks order were taken. Three of us received our meal in basically decent time while the fourth member of our party waited for ages and when the dinner came it was anything but nice - in fact it was inedible. Breakfast is something we wish we would have avoided - from dirty plates to slow service. Front desk staff were there to do their job and nothing more. All in all, not a pleasant stay. Makes us wonder how the four stars are awarded and retained. A big disappointment.

We had a bad time getting our lugage in and out of the car. We did enjoy the bar and the views, good location for exploring Oban. The rooms were fine, good size. The food was OK. the staff was friendly and helpfull.
