Poor value, poorly maintained, and worse of all terrible servicePosted: Fri, May 02 2008Location:

1We have been travelling around the world for the last 7 months, staying in various hotels in Europe, as well as motels in US/Canada, and this has to be rated as one of our worst accommodation experiences.
We booked through the internet for a few nights, at a rate of $US147/pn. This does not include breakfast which we found out on arrival to be an additional 95 DKK or $US20 each! This is terrible value in my books as other better quality hotels we have stayed at were priced much less & included a full buffet breakfast.
Anyway, we checked in pleasantly enough, but then started to note that the lift/decor was quite run down. The lift was old, rackety and has patchy paint chip which was shoddily repainted. The hallway carpet was old/stained with areas of visible wear/tear.
The room itself was a bit on the small side. The two pictures on the wall were fixed strongly but were terribly crooked. The toilet bowl itself had cracks and was badly stained. The bathroom tiling was old (looked like they were installed 20 yrs ago) and the shower drainage itself clogged, leading to the water overflowing all over the floor. Then we found 3 light bulbs in the room were blown but not yet replaced! Our room was not cleaned or made up on one of the days and the staff didn' t seem to care about this.
The lobby appeared professional enough for a 21/2 star hotel. However, the microwave oven that was present in the lobby was faulty (for how long we don't know) and yet there was no sign on the oven during our stay to say it was out of order & they had microwavable meals available to purchase. We bought food thinking we could heat it up, but ended up having to use a secondary microwave in their staff room (which they were not keen to let us use as we had not purchased the hotels meals).
There was a coffee machine in the lobby also which appeared to be welcoming, except for the fact that the ingredients (coffee & milk) always ran out and were never refilled by the reception staff. It would appear that they feel that it is beneath them to do so & not worth their bother when advised it was empty.
The worse part of our experience was the attitude of the reception staff, especially the male staff. Most were very unfriendly and unhelpful and treated us with much disdain. It was like we were an inconvenience to them most of the time & they barely tolerated us. We received better reception service in all the Eastern Europe hotels that we have stayed in the 3 months travel prior. And that's saying something as they're not known for their service skills.
There is supposed to be wireless internet. It worked for 2 of the four nights that we stayed. When I notified the staff of the system being faulty (after I checked with 2 different computers and doing the diagnostic for them), I was told to make an expensive phone call to the company that supply the service, and was treated as if I was not smart enough with the set up. The staff member's response was one of indifference & his attitude reflected that he couldn't care less.
We would have checked out of this abominable hotel earlier except that we had already paid for the booking. We did sight seeing for the next few days, with the only positive thing being that the location of the hotel was within walking distance to the centre of town and is conveniently located behind the main train station (though it is in the red light district and there are quite a few shady characters about the station).
In summary, we would not recommend this hotel to anyone. It should be made into a hostel, and new staff hired!
It is a disgrace to the Choice chain hotel group, with whom we have stayed with in various parts of the world.
