On arriving the courtyard was nice - until you realised the huge amount of steps needed to be climbed with cases and no-one around to help. Toledo seems to be a big wedding venue and the hotel was booked out for a reception which started around 10pm, had fireworks at 2am and was still going at 4am...not the greatest way of aiding a good nights sleep! 2nd night was a lot quieter when the guests had gone.
Breakfast was worst I have ever known and not worth the additional 8 euro charge...unless you are happy with milk that had gone off and mould on the bread! Location was fairly good, close to the town's escalator, but passed nicer looking places further inside the walls which are probably a better bet.
Overall the room was pleasent, the courtyard nice, location OK and breakfast diabolical

We stayed in Hostal del Cardenal for 3 nights in April. We are a bit surprised by the positive comments that this hotel received. Although unarguably the courtyard is fabulous and pretty ,we found the hotel itself quite old and especially smell old.
We were allocated a (small) room facing the courtyard, nothing fancy, just OK. Staff is not particularly friendly neither and were almost invisible during our stay. In our opinion the hotel just does not give you any special feeling.
There is however clearly a lack of luxury accomodation within the city walls, which gives an edge to the Cardenal. Would the AC Hotel or the Parador be within the ancient walls, we wouldn't have doubted one second.
Previous postive feedbacks were given to the restaurant. Please know that although the restaurant and the hotel share the same grounds, the restaurant does not belong to the hotel.
