We booked this hotel some weeks in advance for a break away. Had we read the reviews before we booked we would never have done so and that would have been a shame as we had a good few days away. We did read them the night before we drove up there and were somewhat apprehensive as to what we would find.
We have fairly high standards and the hotel did not disappoint. Is it an all singing all dancing modern super shiny establishment? - no its not - but then that is not what we wanted!
It is a good solid British establishment that delivered what we expected from a Country Inn situated in the middle of nowhere. We were in a superior room in the referbished new barn buildings so we can not comment on rooms in the main building.
Our room was spacious, bright, well appointed, cleaned daily, towels available daily if required or could take the eco friendly option of less frequently. Ample supply of tea and coffee and hot chocolate etc.
We were on a half board option and breakfast was a good typical english hotel breakfast - Tea/Coffee, juice, tinned prunes and gratefruit (think there was another option also), various cereals, toast, full english breakfast, kippers or poached haddock etc. We have had considerabley worse at much posher hotels.
Evening meal was four courses, starter, sorbet, main and sweet followed by coffee and home made fudge. Starters/Mains and Sweets was a choice of between 6-8 of each usually including at least two fish options. We had no complaint with this food all which was prepared to order so generally meant a bit of a wait. There were, especially at the beginning of the week a couple of dishes that were a curious selection of items to put together on a plate - but then if you are not adventurous with food you are going to opt for something else.
We would comment that if you are a real vegitarian that does not eat fish, telling them before you go may be wise as the vegi options did not change much and they might just need a little prodding in the right direction in that area.
The staff were polite and helpful and yes a couple were a bit quirky - but then we were in an old Country Inn in a village that if you sneezed as you entered, you would completely miss as you drove through - better to be a bit quirky than modern and plastic if you ask us.
The bar had a real coal fire and was a pleasant enough room. There was never less than 20 persons eating in the restaurant when we went which was mid week in March.
We had a very pleasant stay and would return.
