We went to England v Sweden in Cologne but were unwilling to pay the jacked up prices that the host cities were charging for accommodation. We found that train connections from Cologne to Koblenz were excellent so staying out of Cologne did not prove to be a problem. We were able to catch a train after the game in the early hours of the morning and found plenty of taxis waiting in Koblenz to take us back to the hotel (about 10 euros) Koblenz itself is a very quaint town, particularly the Aldstadt, and there were many bars & restaurants that were reasonably priced and welcoming, each serving an abundance of excellent german beer. The hotel itself is a couple of miles out of Koblenz, but there is a bus stop just outside so this was not a problem. The hosts were extremely friendly and very helpful. The restaurant is lovely but better still is the beergarden, which proved popular in the sunny evenings. The menu was disappointing at first because despite featuring a variety of tasty sounding meat dishes, there was nothing for my vegetarian wife. However the chef kindly offered to prepare a Vegetable bake, and we learnt that they also do fish though this was not on the menu. She ended up having a whole grilled trout with all the trimmings for just 9 euros. We later learnt that they do pizza as well so there was no need to panic! I was more than happy with my Argentinian fillet steak both nights! We would highly recommend this small, friendly hotel to anyone visiting Koblenz.
